Pick the right spot for your tiki torch.

Since fire is involved, you have to ensure that nothing will come into contact with either the base or head of the torch. This includes moving objects, like branches, umbrellas, humans, or fabric. Try to leave a clearance of at least six feet in any direction from the torch.

Plant the torch on a level surface, making sure it won't wiggle or droop over the course of the evening. If possible, keep the torch out of the way of foot traffic, as far as possible from places where a guest might bump into it.

Most tiki torches are designed for outdoor use; unless you have purchased an indoor, paraffin-burning torch specifically labeled for such use, don't burn torches in an enclosed area.

Gas and propane safety

Like any other appliance, a gas or propane tiki torch needs to be checked out before use. Physically inspect the torch for the accumulation of carbon or debris. Make sure the fuel line remains unobstructed and locate the shut off valve, just in case of emergency. Adequate ventilation in the area around the natural gas torch ensures safety for your guests. Your natural gas or propane supplier will refer you to specific safety resources in your community and can often inspect your hardware for free.

Once the party's started.

Never move tiki torches when they are aflame. Let the tiki torch cool before touching it. Once you've finished for the evening, make sure the torches are fully extinguished and the fuel supply lines are closed.
