Sizing up patio umbrellas

The first thing to figure out when selecting a wood patio umbrella is the size of the umbrella you'll need. Simply determine how large a table area you need covered, and then chose the size umbrella that corresponds.

  • 6-foot umbrella: for tables up to 30 inches in diameter.
  • 7-foot patio umbrella: for tables up to 36 inches in diameter.
  • 9-foot patio umbrella: for tables up to 48 inches in diameter (or a square table for four).
  • 11-foot patio umbrella: for tables up to 60 inches in diameter (or a rectangular table for six).

Fabric comparisons

Most umbrellas are made from some combination of polyester fibers, including PVC weave, olefin, or acrylic. As they do not contain natural fibers, these fabrics do not allow the growth of mildew if kept clean and allowed to air dry thoroughly.
